Willamette Community Garden ready to grow

Willamette Community Garden, on Main Street near First Avenue, starts its third growing season this spring. The garden began in 2010 as a joint effort between members of the Salem / Harrison Neighborhood Watch group and the City of Albany, with initial funding from the Central Albany Revitalization Area.
In planning the garden, organizers hoped to create a space that would bring community members together to provide food for their families, but the garden has exceeded expectations. From the beginning, the garden has energized local businesses, Linn County Master Gardeners and neighbors to work together and have fun. In each of the first two years, the garden contributed to Albany food distribution centers and meal programs.
Garden spaces are all reserved, and the garden committee is considering adding more beds. Thanks to the hard work of garden members and friends, planting beds are framed, compost is gathered and rotting nicely, and fruit trees, grapes and blueberries will go in this spring.
Since the initial funding, the garden has relied on donations and fund-raising events; a plant sale is planned this spring and a harvest celebration is planned for fall. For more information or to donate to the effort, call Lyla Heyman at 541-926-7215.
