houseAmerican Renaissance Style
336 Ninth Avenue SW, c. 1915

The American Renaissance was a movement that began in about 1876 and lasted until about 1920. It evolved out of the tradition of the Ecoledes Beaux Arts (the School of Fine Arts) in Paris which taught classic forms and principles. Most of the public buildings built from 1900 – 1920 in Albany were built in this style.

Characteristic elements of the style include:

  1. Imitation of Greek, Roman, Italian Renaissance, 16th Century French and English architecture.
  2. Monumental size, often with a large flight of steps.
  3. Smooth stone, or brick construction materials.
  4. Balanced symmetry.
