Colonial
Revival Style
726 Fifth Avenue SW, c. 1900
The Colonial Revival style was popular from about 1895 through 1915. It became popular at this point in American history, in part, because the excessive use of decoration in Victorian architecture created a new need for order and simplicity. It was also an attempt to establish an "American" style of architecture based on 17th and 18th Century colonial buildings. Although architects designing this style used historic buildings as models, they also incorporated new ideas and technology creating a new style. The main characteristics of the style include:
- Rectangular form
- Low-lying hipped roof
- Prominent entryway, often with balconied portico supported by large columns.
- Colonial building details such as Palladian windows, oval windows, fanlights, garlands and swags.
