829 Washington Street SW, c. 1892

The first original American style of architecture to emerge is called the Stick Style. The characteristic "stick work" was applied at vertical, horizontal and diagonal angles to suggest the unseen structural frame. It was the first architectural style to use wood as wood and not merely an imitation of stone.

Eastlake elements are usually applied to stick style houses. They include turned columns, spools, spindles and round three-dimensional jigsaw cut disks applied as decorative items. Most Eastlake/Stick Style houses were built from 1870 through 1890. The main characteristics of the style include:

  1. Steeply pitched intersecting gable roofs
  2. Asymmetrical composition
  3. Balconies
  4. Decorative "stick work" and paneling
  5. Verandas and porches with posts and diagonal braces
