832 Broadalbin Street SW, c. 1888

Inspired by Italian Renaissance palaces and county villas. The Italianate Style was popular in the United States from 1870-1890. It was an attempt to capture in wood and brick the look of the Romantic Italian buildings and was popularized by the pattern books of Andrew Jackson Downing. The main characteristics are:

  1. Flat or low-pitched roofs
  2. Overhanging eaves supported by decorative brackets
  3. Bay windows
  4. Tall first floor windows
  5. Round or segmental arched windows and door openings
