The Queen Anne style was the most popular style of architecture of the Victorian era. It was popular from the late 1880s until about 1905. Houses in every size and shape were built in this style as well as churches and commercial buildings. The main characteristics of the style include:

  1. Irregularity of plan and massing, including towers and turrets, wrap-around porches and verandas.
  2. Varied wall surfaces. Brick, horizontal siding, shingles – all on one wall.
  3. Upper stories projecting beyond the lower stories.
  4. Varied shapes of windows.
  5. Various roof shapes in combination; i.e., hip roof, gable roof, gambrel roof.
