GREAT NEIGHBORHOODS
PROJECT REPORT
City of Albany, Oregon, November 1998
GENERAL TRANSPORTATION
North Albany Middle School, 11/17/98
- Where the lake drains across Quarry Road, raise the road enough to add a culvert and keep the road from flooding.
- Too much money spent on train station old building.
- Amtrak should be the hub for the buses, train, etc.
- Expand the bus system: more per hour, "bankers hours only."
- Need alternative means of transportation so we don't have gridlock. Develop airport-get those people off the roads; keep airport here.
- How are we paying for the couplet interchange landscaping?
- Why giving so much money/benefits to the sternwheeler?
- Committing to a continued operation of Albany's airport, especially signing of long-term leases. Seems like we ought to have a taxiway to fairgrounds so people attending can fly in to participate. There should be parking for aircraft at the fairgrounds.
- Wheelchair accessible bus stops.
- Support self-service fueling for aircraft in legislature.
Calapooia Middle School, 11/19/98
- Extend the airport to 40 years.
- Look at our future transportation.
- Would like to see the train-switching station at Queen and Pacific moved. An overpass would be a distant second option, but something needs to be done soon. Why should the city pay millions of dollars to construct an overpass just to accommodate a wealthy railroad? Make them move outside of town..
- Improve traffic flow:
- Fix Ellsworth/Lyon-3 lanes; put in a protected right turn from Ellsworth onto Pacific Boulevard.
- Keep traffic plan so that new construction does not cause traffic problems in existing neighborhoods (plan ahead).
- Traffic at 24th and Geary-15-min. wait to get across sometimes; no one honors crosswalk.
- School crossing from Calapooia Middle School-Cars do not stop for crosswalk even when children are crossing. Cars drive approximately 45 mph through crosswalk. Some parents drive their children to school (Calapooia) so they do not have to walk across Geary Street.
- Speed on 34th and Marion, especially after new apartments on 34th Street. Suggest traffic signal? Hill or Madison and 34th Street-Lafayette School/Calapooia children have to cross. Telephone booth on 34th and Marion blocks view.
- I would like to see better bus service-buses in evening, on weekends and holidays. Many people depend on buses...people who can't drive, people who can't afford cars (older people, students, young families).
