GREAT NEIGHBORHOODS
PROJECT REPORT
City of Albany, Oregon, November 1998
SIDEWALKS, BIKE LANES AND ROADS
Mennonite Village & Memorial Middle School, 11/12/98
- Would prefer curbside sidewalks; set back sidewalks are more expensive and provide less vision for vehicles. Tree roots also destroy sidewalks and streets. (O.K. if select appropriate trees.)
- Sidewalk or path needed between Brookside and Mt. View on Waverly Drive (east side of street)
- Like the system of bike lanes in the city.
- Could street islands be painted with reflective paint for visibility?
- More pedestrian islands needed on Santiam and Pacific (especially near Waverly Park).
- Bicycle lanes are a benefit to wheelchair use also.
- Many motorists don't realize that motorized wheelchairs and carts can legally and safely travel on bike lanes provided they have the necessary signs and lights.
- In areas near schools without sidewalks, grants may be available for new sidewalks (needed for safety).
- All sidewalks need curb cuts for wheelchairs, strollers, bicycles and other wheeled appliances.
- Setback sidewalks are expensive to maintain and look bad soon with no upkeep.
- Setback sidewalks make a great neighborhood - 'friendly factor'.
- Bike/Recreation trail to Corvallis via River.
- Remove yellow lines on North Albany Road where appropriate.
- Look for ways for traffic to move more smoothly.
- Additional sidewalks and remove ditches in North Albany.
- Examine speed limits and safety relative to new developments and traffic density along:
North Albany Road
Gibson Hill Road Quarry
Springhill Road
Scenic Drive
- Turn lanes on North Albany Road at North Albany Middle School.
- More Recreation trail development in North Albany.
- Sidewalks on all streets, particularly on streets where they do not exist.
- Write code to encourage neighborhood stores.
- School district needs to work out agreement to set aside land for the North Albany Road/school entrance.
- Drive lane redesign.
