GREAT NEIGHBORHOODS
PROJECT REPORT
City of Albany, Oregon, November 1998
SIGNS
Mennonite Village & Memorial Middle School, 11/12/98; North Albany Middle School, 11/17/98
- Proliferation of billboards here and throughout the state is a concern.
There are billboard regulations on statewide basis through scenic areas.
Vermont and Hawaii have outlawed billboards completely.
- How much do sign companies charge to advertise on billboards?
- How are billboards taxed?
- All large signs should be inventoried to see the extent of the issue.
- Projecting signs are not allowed in downtown area - this is too restrictive.
You can't see name of business until you are in front of it.
- Problems: Ugly signs, clutter, too large.
- Everyone needs, uses signs.
- No matter what you think of, someone will think of a way around the sign regulations.
- Moratorium on all new signs until code is rewritten(?)
- Effective date of new sign and, more? Can an emergency clause be used? Otherwise, permit will be applied for before the more restrictive regulations take effect.
