Department Tours

Tours of the Police department are offered to schools, Scout groups and others. Included in the tour is a short presentation on programs and services offered by the department.

Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.)

D.A.R.E. is a nationally recognized drug education program offered to Albany’s fifth grade students. It is designed to educate our youth about avoiding drug abuse and to improve the student’s self esteem by teaching them the skills to say "NO" to drugs. The Albany Police Department has been teaching D.A.R.E. since 1989. The D.A.R.E. officer must have a minimum two years’ law enforcement experience and successfully complete a two-week state training course.

Eddie Eagle Program

Eddie Eagle is a National Rifle Association-sponsored presentation given to children kindergarten through fourth grade. It teaches children the four basic principles of what to do if they see a dangerous weapon. Those principles are: (1) Stop; (2) Don’t touch; (3) Leave the area; and (4) Tell an adult. We currently teach this program to all kindergartners and second graders during our Child Safety Education program.

Visits from McGruff, The Crime Dog

McGruff, the Crime Dog.The first McGruff public service ads were developed in 1979 and premiered in February 1980. Those ads carried the tagline "Brought to you as a public service of the Crime Prevention Tips Coalition and the Advertising Council."

Crime Prevention Tips Month was first observed in October1983. In September 1984, the U.S. Postal Service honored McGruff’s remarkable public acceptance by issuing a commemorative stamp in his likeness. By 1987, the U.S. Congress was taking official note of the campaign’s effectiveness.
Over the years, thanks to the efforts of local Crime Prevention Tips practitioners, McGruff has appeared at a multitude of events across the country. He’s been to schools, hospitals, shopping malls, rodeos, fairs, and parades. His image appears on many items such as t-shirts and mugs. But everywhere, his message that responsible action, by both individuals and groups, can "Take a Bite Out Of Crime". His advice on how to do this is the key to his effectiveness.

McGruff is extremely popular and versatile. He never forgets his prime mission – helping people and communities to prevent crime and improve the quality of life for themselves, their families, their friends, and neighborhoods.
