Grease blockages in sewer pipes are a direct result of grease poured down the drain. These blockages can create sewer overflows threatening the health of our citizens, and costing thousands of dollars to clean up. The key to preventing grease blockages is to keep grease out of the system.

The City of Albany is launching a new program to help reduce the amount of grease in our sewer lines and the associated cleaning costs. The Fat Trapper is an airtight plastic container with a foil-lined bag inside. Simply pour hot grease and oil into the bag and replace the lid on the container. When the bag is full, close it and discard it with your household garbage. The Fat Trapper eliminates spills and odors while protecting your household plumbing system and the City’s sewer lines.

These kits are being provided free to homeowners in areas where the sewer lines are known to be vulnerable to grease blockages. To request a Fat Trapper, contact Operations Customer Service at 917-7600.
