I am wondering if the City of Albany, possibly through Parks & Rec. offers any afterschool programs, and if so, how I might get details about it.

Answer provided by: (provided by Theresa Johnson, Parks & Recreation Recreation Coordinator who specializes in children's activities)

Albany Parks & Recreation has a focused, one-day-a-week program at one of Albany's three middle schools. "Promise Arts" is a 10-week program held on Mondays from 2:45 to 5:00 p.m. The program is a collaborative effort between Parks & Recreation and the Oregon State University Extension Service (4-H). Snack time is from 2:45 to 3:00 p.m, followed by local artists who teach a variety of art disciplines, including drawing, photography, woodworking, fiber, and more. The fee is $10 for 10 weeks.

Albany Public Library also offers a bi-monthly book and writing club.

Each program has its own funding source. The Promise Arts program is funded by monies from an Oregon Arts Commission grant and from Albany's Promise, a coalition of youth-serving organizations. Administration and miscellaneous expenses are provided by our two agencies. We are hoping to scrape together enough funds to repeat this program in the spring.

Another middle school has an after-school program funded by user fees and our local YMCA.

All three middle schools have homework help programs, held after school or during the school day.

Other before and after school options in Albany include the Boys & Girls Club of Albany and Community After School Program. The latter is for grades kindergarten through 5, and is based at four of our 13 elementary schools.

Transportation is provided for children who do not attend the four site schools. The Boys & Girls Club has programs for K-12th grades. They provide transportation to their site for programs.
