I was wondering where the Hispanic population of Albany is represented in the 2000 Census of Race. If I could get a number of Hispanics living in Albany, I would be very grateful.
A: (Answer provided by Rich Catlin, Planner III)
The short answer is that Hispanic was not counted as a race in the Census. The terms Spanish, Hispanic, or Latino generally refer to the heritage, nationality group, lineage, or country of birth of the person or the person's parents or ancestors before their arrival in the United States. The Census form listed six races (White, Black or African American, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, and Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander) and the option of Other Races. The question of Hispanic or Latino origin was asked under a separate question in the Census short form. The 2000 Census reported 2,489 Hispanic or Latino residents among Albany's population of 40,852.
