Is the City going to pave Main Street by the old church? (south of Fourth Avenue)

Answer provided by: (provided by Mark Shepard, City Engineer)

We realize that Main Street is in poor condition between Fourth Avenue and Pacific Boulevard. When we conducted a community survey in early 2000, many residents identified this section of Main Street as a top priority for reconstruction. The most heavily-used part of Main Street, north of Fourth Avenue, got a surface overlay in the summer of 2000 when Santiam Road was rebuilt. The section between Santiam Road and Seventh Avenue is listed in the City’s current Capital Improvement Program as a major collector street that needs to be rebuilt, but no money is available for that.

City residents approved $10 million in additional property taxes in November 1998 to do several major street projects that included Santiam Road. The City Council asked for another $10 million to do more streets in November 2000, but that measure was not approved. They canceled plans to ask for the money again in November 2002. A tax levy to pay for more police and fire department services was submitted to voters instead, and it was approved.

At this time, we do not expect to do any major resurfacing on that portion of Main Street in the next five years. The City Council is considering asking voters within the next two or three years to approve additional property taxes to pay for rebuilding more streets, and Main Street could be reconsidered at that time.
