The Albany City Council is conducting its annual recruitment for volunteers to serve on its 15 citizen advisory groups. Applicants must live within Albany’s jurisdictional city limits unless otherwise specified below. Out of 103 term positions, 34 will be expiring December 31, 2018, or are vacant due to resignations. Appointments will begin in January 2019.

Airport Advisory Commission: Four positions; appointed by Mayor-elect and Councilors-elect from Wards I-a, II-a, and III-a. No fewer than four members shall have their principal place of residence within the jurisdictional city limits. By policy, Council does not appoint persons who have a significant finance interest in the anticipated considerations of this commission.

Albany Arts Commission: Two positions; appointed by Mayor-elect and ratified by City Council.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission: Three positions; appointed by Mayor-elect and ratified by City Council.

Budget Committee: Two positions; appointed by Councilor-elect from Ward III-a and Councilor Kellum. Applicants need not be residents of those wards but must be a city resident. Applicants must be registered voters.

Building Board of Appeals: Two positions; appointed by City Council. Applicants must be qualified by experience and training to pass on building construction matters.

Central Albany Revitalization Area (CARA) Advisory Board: Two positions; appointed by Councilor Coburn and Councilor-elect from Ward I-a. Applicants need not be residents of those wards but must be city residents.

City Tree Commission: One position; appointed by Mayor-elect and ratified by City Council. Applicants who either own property or maintain a business within Albany’s jurisdictional city limits do not need to be city residents.

Community Development Commission: Two positions; appointed by Mayor-elect and ratified by City Council.

Human Relations Commission: Three positions; appointed by Councilor Coburn, Councilor-elect from Ward III-a, and Councilor Kellum. Applicants need not be residents of those wards but must be city residents.

Landmarks Advisory Commission: Two positions; appointed by Mayor-elect and ratified by City Council. Applicants must have demonstrable knowledge, interest, or competence in historic preservation and additional in one of the following fields: architecture, landscape architecture, history, art history, education, construction, real estate, development, urban planning, archaeology, law, finance, cultural geography, cultural anthropology, local history, or related disciplines.

Parks & Recreation Commission: One position; appointed by Mayor-elect and ratified by City Council.

Planning Commission: Three positions; appointed by Mayor-elect and Councilors-elect from Wards I-a and III-a. The Mayor-elect’s appointee is from at large within Albany’s jurisdictional city limits; Councilor-elects’ appointees must reside within their respective wards.

Public Safety Commission: Two positions; appointed by Councilor Coburn and Councilor-elect from Ward III-a. Applicants need not be residents of those wards but must be city residents, except for the rural fire districts’ representative. 

Traffic Safety Commission: Three positions; appointed by Mayor-elect and ratified by City Council.

Transient Lodging Tax (TLT) Advisory Committee: Two positions; appointed by Councilor-elect from Ward I-a and Councilor Sykes. Applicants must live or work in Albany’s jurisdictional city limits and may not be a TLT recipient or a board member of a TLT recipient or TLT collector organization.

Residents are limited to serving simultaneously on only one of the following four groups that have the greatest influence on Council decisions: Budget Committee, Library Board, Parks & Recreation Commission, and Planning Commission.
