Salem Avenue will close to through traffic from Waverly Drive to Albany Avenue December 9-22 while construction crews install a portion of sewer mainline that is 30 inches in diameter in a trench 20 feet deep just east of Lake Street.
Traffic will detour around the closure on Waverly Drive, Pacific Boulevard and Albany Avenue. Residents and businesses in the closed area will continue to have access. Drivers should expect congestion in the area.
Albany Transit passengers who use the bus stop in the closed street section should use the stop on Salem Avenue at Waverly Drive or on Airport Road near Carl’s Jr. For transit information, call 541-917-7667.
The construction work is part of the $4.5 million Cox Creek sewer interceptor project to replace undersized pipes from Albany’s Water Reclamation Facility to east of Interstate 5.K & E Excavating Inc., of Salem, is the contractor for the project. The first phase of the project should be completed in about two months.
Since work began in July, 1,900 feet of 24-inch and 30-inch pipe has been installed as well as 135 feet of 48-inch steel casing pipe under the railroad tracks north of Salem Avenue. When complete, the new pipe will increase sewer system capacity and reduce the likelihood of raw sewage overflows in the east Albany area.
At the same time, Albany’s river front interceptor lift station and sewer force main project is well underway and expected to be completed in the spring of 2020. Pacific Excavation of Eugene began construction on the $7.2 million project in August. The project includes construction of almost 1 ½ miles of 30-inch sewer force main and a new wet-weather lift station that is 34 feet deep. The force main portion is now complete; only the lift station remains to be built. Once completed, the lift station will be capable of pumping 12,500 gallons of sewage per minute into the force main to be treated at the water reclamation facility. That’s enough pumping capacity to fill an Olympic-size swimming pool in one hour.

Detour Planned for Salem Ave
In order to complete the sewer project in a safe and timely manner, Salem Avenue will be closed from Waverly Drive to Albany Avenue from December 9th through December 22nd. During this time, traffic will be detoured around the closure via Waverly Drive, Pacific Boulevard, and Albany Avenue. Residential and business access between Waverly Drive and Albany Avenue will be maintained during the closure, but no traffic will be able to pass through the closure area.
At times, motorists should expect congestion throughout the area during the closure. Your patience and understanding is appreciated as we work to complete these improvements.
If you have questions about the detour, please call the Albany Public Works Department at 541-917-7676 or visit the City’s website at www.cityofalbany.net.
